Canine Hydrotherapy

Here at Water Paws, Canine Hydrotherapy consists of two high quality services. We are fortunate to offer both POOL and UNDERWATER TREADMILL therapy.

Each individual dog will have their own treatment plan to cater to their needs and which form of treatment they require. Below is some of the key information about both our forms of treatment.

Underwater Treadmill Therapy:

  • Underwater treadmill therapy in canine/small animal hydrotherapy entails controlling the movements on an aquatic treadmill. This is done via controlling the belt speed, water height and treadmill techniques. This allows treatment to be precise.
  • With 360 degrees vision of how the dog is moving it gives a great form of knowledge about their needs and condition which enable treatment to be direct and targeting to how the dog is moving, this allows for a high level of accuracy and monitoring to ensure a successful treatment programme.
  • The water's buoyancy supports them with an 80% weightless feel, lessening the impact on their joints, while resistance enhances muscle engagement. This form of rehabilitation is commonly used to address various musculoskeletal issues, promote healing after surgery, and improve overall mobility.
  • The Underwater Treadmill supports all Musculoskeletal, Spinal and Neurological conditions, however choice of pool or Underwater treadmill will be discussed on each dog’s initial assessment.
  • Dogs can typically feel more relaxed as their feet are placed on the belt, this will reduce the risk of any panic.

In order to treat such a wide variety of conditions and injuries we structure our service between grade 1-3, this enables us to fine tune our treatment programme and make it individual to each client. Below is a description of what we offer;

Grade 1, is tailored to maintain strength and stamina while keeping a certain level of fitness and muscle.

Grade 2, this service aims to help treat conditions such as Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Arthritis, ligament injuries, Luxating Patella and many more.

Grade 3, this service is tailored to treat spinal and neurological conditions.

This service is typically, but not limited, to provide rehabilitation at a variety of grades to our pets. A consultation is required before treatment commences.

Pool Therapy

  • The pool is a controlled form of exercise in water to aid rehabilitation whilst having fun. This low-impact therapy provides buoyancy, whilst reducing stress on joints and strengthen muscles. It's often used for conditions like arthritis, post-surgery recovery, or general fitness improvement and a form of fun.
  • All swimming dogs are 100% buoyant within the water allowing each dog to feel weightless while reducing all stress of the joints. This enables optimum function and strength to be restored.
  • Key property within the water plays a huge part in the success of hydrotherapy and these include; Buoyancy, Hydrostatic Pressure, Resistance, Turbulence, Cohesion, Specific Gravity and Temperature. All these components contribute to each dog's programme. Contact us to talk about these in greater depth!
  • The pool is a great tool to increase the Cardiovascular system.
  • The pool can be very good for many conditions in particular Elbow Dysplasia, Osteoarthritis and Hip Dysplasia.

Each dog will have their own treatment programme and complete a variety of timed swims, overtime we aim to see a high level of progression which will target the relevant areas.

This service is typically, but not limited, to provide rehabilitation at a variety of grades to our pets. A consultation is required before treatment commences.

We also offer:

  • Fun Swim - this is aimed for small animals who love water and enjoy splashing around while gaining all the benefits the water has to offer! Swimming offers an Alternative to walking which has huge medical advantages such as improved muscle mass which wouldn’t usually get targeted in an activity like walking. We use many different tools to create a fun environment, this is very individual but include the use of toys, treats and lots of human praise.
  • Confidence Swims - ideal for small animals who lack confidence in water, this swim is designed to help your small animal get used to different environments which is a great way to build their confidence. This has many behavioural, mental and physical benefits. Gaining confidence in different environments will encourage confidence to grow in other unusual environments this supports training to find comfort in a typically uncomfortable situation.
  • Puppy Swim - perfect for puppies below 12 months who are looking to get more comfortable in water in a fun, progressive and comfortable environment! It is crucial that all puppies get well socialised at a young age but exposure to new sights, smells and textures is also important. To do this at a young age will help create the structure for a well-balanced dog.
  • Weight Loss - Swimming is an amazing way for your small animal to lose weight while having fun! Due to all the great water properties like buoyancy and resistance it enables fitness to be safe. We work with the owners in conjunction with the Veterinary suggested Diet. A small animal who is overweight put a lot of excess weight through their joints, this has the potential to create pain, discomfort and Musculoskeletal conditions such as Elbow Dysplasia. So, why not encourage fun in what can be a serious medical need.
  • Swim & Spa - we are now offering a swim and spa experience, this package includes a half an hour swim, bath, brush and blow dry! Many dogs love to swim and get pampered, so why not give the biggest gift of both luxuries. The Swim and Spa experience is one of our best sellers.
